Biotechnology
Biotechnology is one of the most advanced disciplines of biology. Modern molecular
biological techniques are applied on living cells, system or biological process to
produce the product which is ultimately useful for betterment of human beings. The
technology basically utilizes cells & cellular components such as DNA, proteins &
other cellular biomolecules to develop the products.
The scope of biotechnology
extends to various areas like pharmaceutical & healthcare, agriculture, forestry,
sericulture, horticulture, industrial bio-product, food processing, environmental
cleaning, forensic sciences, bioinformatics, computational biology etc. Many
breakthroughs have been made by using biotechnological tools in all these areas till
now and is laying a foundation for much more scope in future.
The Department of Biotechnology offers the Bachelor of Technology in Biotechnology with a comprehensive curriculum focussing on the advanced molecular biology applications in human and animal health, agriculture, environment and biochemical production. The curriculum is of diverse nature consisting of the subjects from foundation to applied nature that includes Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Industrial Biotechnology, Green Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Bioinformatics, Bio-Techniques, Plant and Animal Cell Culture, Biopharmaceutical Technology, Food Technology, Immunology, Biosafety etc.
The amalgamation of theory and practical learning through the laboratories, field work, industry visits, research projects, industrial internships along with interdisciplinary learning approach, students are equipped with the multidimensional skills necessary for careers spanning – production, technology development, analysis, research & development, consulting, management etc. within the biotech industries.
Emphasizing the applications of biotechnology, the programme addresses the challenges in food, agriculture, healthcare sector etc. and the scope of the biotechnology in problem solving, efficient product development, sustainable practices etc. ultimately for the betterment of the society.

Dr. Archana Gajbhiye
Associate Professor & HoD, Biotechnology at Sir Padampat Singhania University
Dr. Archana Gajbhiye is the Head of the Department of Biotechnology since 2011.
She has more than 20 years of work experience including teaching, research and
industrial experience. She has been involved in teaching various subjects such as
Microbiology, Genetic Engineering, Recombinant DNA Technology, Downstream
Processing, Industrial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Bioenergetics
and Metabolism, Analytical Techniques and bioinstrumentation, Immunology etc. Her
area of specialization is Microbial Biotechnology.

Her research interests include Soil
Microbiology, Biofuel production and Medicinal properties of endophytic fungi. She
was awarded RGNF JRF and SRF by the UGC during her Doctorate degree
programme. She has published more than 10 research articles in the Scopus
indexed Journals. Dr. Gajbhiye submitted seven nucleotide sequences derived from
Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus spp. to National Center for Biotechnology
Information (NCBI, USA). She was recipient of best poster award in the Intl. Conf. on
‘Innovations in Biotechnology and their Applications’ held at Rajiv Gandhi
Biotechnology Centre, RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur, India. Three research
scholars obtained their Ph.D degree under her supervision. She has supervised
several research projects of B.Tech students. She has been actively involved in the
academic activities as NEP 2020 implementation, organising training programmes,
technical, cultural & sports events etc. at SPSU, Udaipur.

Passed XII std or its equivalent examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry or Biotechnology or Biology or Technical Vocational subject or Computer Science or Information Technology or Informatics Practices or Agriculture or Engineering Graphics or Business Studies and obtained at least 50 % marks (at least 40 % marks, in case of Backward Class categories, Economically Weaker Section and Persons with Disability) in the above subjects taken together.
