Sir Padampat Singhania University convenes its First Convocation
Sir Padampat Singhania University, Udaipur convened its first Convocation on Friday, 21st October 2011. The formal occasion had a solemn and dignified ambience, yet it was colourful with the graduating students, faculty, Academic Council, Board of Management, Chancellor, Chief Guest, President, Vice-President, Vice Chancellor and the Deans all donned in different gowns. At the glittering ceremony, 124 graduates were conferred degrees – 36 MBA degrees from the School of Management and 88 BTech degrees from the School of Engineering.
The Convocation was presided and opened by Chancellor Yadupati Singhania.
In his address, Chancellor Singhania called upon the graduating students to use their knowledge and expertise not just for private benefit but for the benefit of the society at large. He said that, “you are a generation that has the unequalled opportunity and freedom to re-imagine and shape our future, to forge new ways of conducting our affairs and new identities, which are hopefully freed from the obsession with race and colour”.
As leaders of tomorrow, Chancellor Singhania mentioned, “we look to you to exercise, with humility, leadership wherever you find yourself – in the classrooms and schools of our lands; on the mines, in the factories and shops; in hospitals and dispensaries; in legal practices, in corporate offices and courts; in research institutions and scientific laboratories; in financial and public services, and in media and universities”.
The Chief Guest, Lord Tom Sawyer, Chancellor, Teesside University, United Kingdom expressed his delight at addressing the first convocation of SPSU and said, “Like most new things, it brings with it a very strong sense of possibility. It’s also a wonderful thing for a new university to celebrate with its very first group of graduates – a milestone reached”. Taking the line of inclusive growth, Lord Sawyer called upon the graduating students to “recognise that knowledge must be used to help and to serve societies – and that those societies are no longer defined by national boundaries”.
The Guest of Honour, Prof. Said Irandoust, President, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand could not be present at the convocation due to the worst floods in Thailand in decades.
Vice Chancellor P C Deka presented the report on the University. Rinu Ghosh, Vice President, SPSU relived the four years spent by the graduating students with her presentation entitled ‘Nostalgia’. Ashok Ghosh, President, SPSU delivered the Vote of Thanks.
Chancellor Singhania awarded the Chancellor’s Gold Medal to Ms. Amreen Qureshi for obtaining the highest marks amongst all the programmes offered by the University.
Vice Chancellor Deka awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Gold Medals to the toppers in the respective programmes - Himanshu Arora – Master of Business Administration, Amreen Qureshi – BTech (Biotechnology), Nishant Lakhara - BTech (Computer Science & Engineering), Niti Jain - BTech (Information Technology) and Deepak Achariya – BTech (Electronics & Communications).
